Is an MCImetro phone number VOIP?
ApplySift reads it as: VOIP wholesalerYes. MCImetro is a carrier whose numbers are provisioned by software to VOIP platforms and apps, not sold as phone lines to people. When a reverse lookup on an applicant's number says MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC, this is what it means.
What MCImetro is
MCImetro Access Transmission Services is the local-carrier entity Verizon Business inherited from MCI. It holds the numbers for Verizon's business voice products and for wholesale customers who resell them, which is why it shows up on reverse lookups as "MCImetro" rather than Verizon. It has nothing to do with Verizon Wireless, whose mobile numbers sit in Cellco Partnership blocks.
By the numbers
Every North American number belongs to a block of a thousand, and every assigned block is listed with its holder in NANPA's public thousands-block report. Some holders are also assigned whole exchanges of ten thousand numbers in the central-office code report. These counts are from the October 2026 reports. The area codes with the most MCImetro blocks are 571, 801, 302, 203, 520, 916, which says more about where numbers are in demand than about where the applicant lives: a number from a wholesaler is picked from whatever area code the buyer asked for.
How it appears in a lookup
The record lists the legal entity that holds the block, often with a state suffix. MCImetro appears under these names, most common first:
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC (13,704)
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC - NY (1,397)
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC - CA (1,143)
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC - OH (1,085)
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC - NC (795)
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC - MI (697)
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC - TX (594)
- MCIMETRO ACCESS TRANSMISSION SERVICES LLC - MO (574)
Why an applicant's number lands here
Business VOIP and wholesale resale both land here, so an MCImetro number can be a legitimate work line as easily as an app-assigned number. Few applicants give a work number on a job application, though, which is why the signal still earns its place. Treat it as a reason to check the rest of the row, not a verdict.
In one real pool of 1,455 applications to a remote engineering role, 60% of the phone numbers were in wholesaler blocks like these; a paid line-type lookup agreed with the public-record check on 99% of them. Why fraud rings use VOIP numbers explains the pattern, and the signals page gives the weight this reason carries in a score.
What this does not tell you
- Ported numbers. A number moved from one carrier to another keeps its original block in the public record. A real mobile number ported to a VOIP app still reads as the mobile carrier, and an MCImetro number ported to a mobile carrier still reads as MCImetro. Porting data is not public, so no free lookup can see it.
- Who the person is. The record names the carrier, never the subscriber. ApplySift uses the block holder as one signal among several and never rejects anyone on its own.
